Important Fair Dates Set

 

The Colorado County Fair Board of Directors is looking forward to seeing everyone at this year’s fair.  The following is a list of important dates and times for the Home Economics Department:

•Friday, Sept. 5, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. - final day to turn in entry cards and fees at Colorado County Extension office.

•Wednesday, Sept. 10, 3-6:30 p.m. - Entry check-in time at the fair grounds in the Home Economics Building.

•Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, 8-9 a.m. - Entry check-in time at the fair grounds in the Home Economics Building for baked goods, decorated baked goods, farm and produce, and floriculture specimens only.

•Thursday, Sept. 11, 9:30 a.m. - Judging.

•Sunday, Sept. 14, 5 p.m. - Pictures will be taken of Home Economic champions in all age divisions and categories.

•Sunday, Sept. 14, 5-6 p.m. - Entries will be released for pick-up.

 

 

 

Colorado County Fair Queen Contests Open

Contestants are being sought for the Colorado County Fair Queen and Junior Queen Contests which will be at the Columbus High School auditorium on Saturday, Sept. 6. Girls between the ages of 10 and 13 are eligible to enter the Colorado County Junior Queen Contest and girls from 14 to 21 years of age may enter the Colorado County Fair Queen Contest. All contestants must be single and must be residents of the county or attend school within the county.

 

To qualify for the pageant, contestants for junior queen must sell 20 season passes and fair queen contestants must sell 50 season passes for the 2003 fair. The fair queen contestant who sells the largest dollar amount of season passes will be crowned membership queen and will receive a $2,000 scholarship and a life membership in the fair association. The first runner-up in season pass sales will receive a $750 scholarship and the second runner-up in sales will receive a $500 scholarship.

 

The fair queen and junior fair queen will be chosen by out‑of-­county judges. They will be judged on personality, appearance and poise. The contestant chosen fair queen will receive the $1,000 Leslie Schmidt Heard Memorial Scholarship. If the contestant who wins the Membership Queen Sales Contest is also chosen fair queen by the panel of judges, she will receive both awards.

 

The fair queen, membership queen and junior fair queen will participate in activities during the 25th annual Colorado County Fair at the Colorado County Ag Complex on the Highway 71 Bypass from Sept. 11-14. They will also represent the fair association by riding the official fair float in area parades  throughout the coming year.

 

A complete set of rules, entry forms and season passes may be obtained by calling one of the following members of the queens contest committee: Pamela Potter at (979) 732‑2705, Deborah Hayward at (979) 725‑8603 and Diana Brunner at (979) 234‑5671. The deadline to enter the contest is Friday, Aug. 15, 5 p.m., no exceptions.

 

 

Home economic entries sought for fair

 

The Colorado County Fair will be Sept. 11-14. The chairmen and committees of the Colorado County Fair Home Economics Department are proud of the county and the individuals who live in it. They take pride in volunteering their time for the benefit of our youth and enjoy seeing the outstanding work of all exhibitors. This year, the fair will turn 25 years young, and to celebrate the chairmen and committees of the Home Economics Department invite all to join in the fun and enter their “pride and joys” that may be tucked away safely in the comforts of home.

 

Competiton in the Home Economics Department of the 25th annual Colorado County Fair will include the following divisions: needlework, handicrafts, clothing, canned products, baked goods, decorated baked goods, floriculture, farm produce, favorite recipe contest, Texana and collective hobbies.

 

Each person entering items in the Home Economics Department must complete an entry card. Entry cards and fair catalogs with complete rules are available from the Colorado County Extension office and Potter's Western Store in Columbus, First National Bank in Eagle Lake, Weimar City Hall, Heinsohn's Store in Frelsburg, Nada Grocery, Sandy Creek Drive-In in Sheridan, Bernardo Farm and Ranch Supply, Larry’s Super Service in Garwood, and Schulz General Store in New Ulm. Entry cards and fees in the Home Economics Department are due at the Colorado County Extension office by 5 p.m., Friday, Sept. 5.

 

Any individual entering 16 or more quality items in the Home Economics Department of the fair at check-in will receive a free season pass. Entry check-in time will be Wednesday, Sept. 10, from 3-6:30 p.m. at the fair grounds in the Home Economics Building. Baked goods, decorated baked goods, farm and produce, favorite recipe and floriculture specimens must be entered on Thursday, Sept. 11, from 8-9 a.m.

A special youth awards division is offered to encourage youth participation. First, second and third place high point awards will be given to youth in each age division: Primary, Junior, and Senior. The awards consist of a trophy donated by San Bernard Electric Cooperative and a cash prize donated by the Texas Extension Education Association. To compete for these awards, a youth must enter at least 10 items.

Last Call for Fair Queens

 

The last call is going out for contestants to sign-up to compete in the 2003 Colorado County Fair Queen and Junior Queen Pageant which will be Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Columbus High School auditorium. Friday, Aug. 15, at 5 p.m. is the deadline for interested young ladies between the ages of 14 and 21 to pick up an entry form for fair queen and girls from 10 to 13 years to pick up a Junior Fair Queen entry form. Girls competing for the Colorado County Fair Queen title will have an opportunity to win a total of $4,250 in college scholarships. All contestants must live in Colorado County or attend school within the county.

Fair Country  Store

 

Once again the Colorado County Fair Country Store is being offered as part of this year's Sept. 11-14. Participants must enter items for the country store in either home economics or the art department. Sale of items for the country store will be accepted at the Colorado County Ag Complex, home of the Colorado County Fair, in the home economics building on Wednesday, Sept. 10, from 3-6:30 p.m.

 

All country store items will be subject to rules and regulations governing the home economics division of the fair. No baked goods, farm produce, canned product or any other food product will be accepted for sale in the country store. Sale items must have a sale tag, provided by the fair, attached with the exhibitor's number and name, sale price and name of the item. Tags, sale cards and special information are available at the Colorado County Extension Agent's office located at 316 Spring St. in Columbus. Note: a uniformed pricing procedure will be enforced. Items are to be priced in increments of 25 cents and items must be tagged and priced before they enter the country store.

 

Twenty percent of the sale price of all country store items, sold in or through the store, will go to the Colorado County  Fair Association; the remaining amount will go to the exhibitor.
